Eagle Nest Preserve

1600+ acres - Endless shoreline on Blue Mt. Lake, Eagle Lake, Utowana Lake - Miles of groomed trails

The Upper Village is part of a large Adirondack estate that dates back to the 1800s. Originally a golf club developed and marketed by William West Durant, this property spans three lakes and offers a rare level of privacy and security. Ownership of the Upper Village grants use of these lands and provides the services of property management staff.

An Adirondack Great Camp
Vestige of another era.

Built at a time of resurgent interest in places of beauty and wilderness conservation, the Great Camps symbolized the Gilded Age of the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers. Designed to blend into their natural surroundings, these sprawling compounds spanned the most coveted and remote shorelines of the Adirondacks, serving as the healthy gathering places and playgrounds for the titans of industry.

The Upper Village
24,920 square feet - 13.3 acres - 765 feet on Eagle Lake

Designed by Rockefeller architect William G. Distin and built in 1937, this lodge-style home is privately situated at the far end of the former golf course with the fairway vistas still beautifully maintained. Nestled into 1600 acres of private trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, and one of the purest lakes in the Adirondack Wilderness for swimming, fishing, and endless enjoyment.

The property includes the Main Lodge, Guest House, and Laundry Cottage which together can house a total of 40 guests in 22 rooms, most with en-suite bathrooms and walk-in closets, and many with their own fireplaces.

Main Lodge
Two story, year-round, log building - 14 bedrooms – 13 bathrooms - 11 fireplaces

Classic Adirondack Great Room

Grand and Cozy, with room for all. The spacious Great Room, with its floor to ceiling fireplace, surrounding comfortable sofas, custom made furniture, window-side reading nooks, and card tables is a welcoming scene in every season. Gatherings of 40+ people are easily accommodated while smaller parties can feel cozy in this space designed for any sized group.

Custom Birch Bark Dining Room and Outdoor Octagonal Porch

This birch bark-lined dining room is known to take people's breath away. Filled with old world elegance, a handsome log and chain mantle, and an expandable dining table that can seat from 10 to 30 people. Eating in can easily become eating out with an expansive covered porch overlooking Eagle Lake, accessible through double doors and offering comfortable sofas for outdoor dining, cocktails or relaxing.

Office/Library

Located just off the Great Room, this wood-paneled room offers the Old World feel in a private study room, with dramatic fireplace.

Bedrooms

With 14 bedrooms, most with their own fireplace, bathroom and walk-in closets, the Main Lodge comfortably accommodates 24 guests. Highlighted by the large master octagonal bedrooms with full dressing rooms, each room has its own charm, carefully designed by the original owner. A central octagonal screened-in "sleeping porch" on the second floor provides quiet, open-air gathering space with a view down to the lake.

Professional Kitchen & Pantries

The open professional kitchen features an industrial twin range with separate grill top, standing freezer, food pantry, walk-in fridge chamber, and separate butler's pantry, with fridge, two dishwashers and plenty of storage.

The Former Staff Quarters in the Main Lodge

Perfect for teenagers, these quarters include one triple room with en-suite bathroom; one double and three single rooms with in-room sinks and a shared full bathroom. A screened-in porch for the staff wing offers a private repose from the rest of the house.

1930's Prohibition Speakeasy Bar & Games Room

Tucked into the hillside, the lowest floor is home to a unique gathering space. At the end of a long corridor designed to look like a mine-shaft is an intimate Speakeasy Bar & Game Room complete with piano, transporting visitors back to the prohibition days of the 1920's and 30s. With windows all around, a working bar, a bathroom and a side room for additional games, this is the quintessential old-style game room. Great for billiards, ping-pong, table soccer, or cards.

Guest House
Two story, year-round - 7 bedrooms - 7 bathrooms - 7 fireplaces

Each bedroom has an en-suite bath and 6 of the 7 rooms have their own fireplaces and walk-in closets. A stone's throw from the Main Lodge, this large Guest House offers substantial additional lodging with a cedar paneled rustic living room for gathering.
It also has a small kitchen so this building can serve as a stand alone home for guests or added family members.

Laundry Cottage
One story studio, seasonal: 1 bed - 1 full bath - 1 huge fireplace -Kitchenette

A cabin in the woods, the romantic "Laundry Cottage" studio provides ample room for a king bed with the added advantage of being a private building. With a magnificent fireplace, bathroom with shower, walk-in closet, and quaint kitchenette, this complete unit is a gem.

Boathouse
Two story - 5 boat slip - 2 bath - 2 oversized fireplaces

An awe-inspiring building unto itself. Outside, the large dock accommodates a flotilla of Adirondack chairs looking out over the lake to a full view of Blue Mountain. The interior features 2 large boat slips, a ping-pong games room, and 2 bathrooms. A second floor offers a Great Room with lake views on 3 sides, floor-to-ceiling fireplace, and balcony overlooking the lake. This is a wonderful place for banquets and entertaining, classes, yoga, art projects, and meetings. Built at the edge of the water, this structure is remarkable in today's Adirondack Park; given the current APA rules, it could never be built today.

Traditional Adirondack Lean-to

The log Lean-to and stone fire-pit – steps from the Main Lodge and the Boathouse -- are true symbols of the Adirondacks and a Great Camp would not be complete without them. Escape to this shelter to enjoy the lake, read a book, have a cook-out with family and friends, or camp out overnight in rustic style.

Tennis Court & Pavilion

The Upper Village includes a private asphalt paved tennis court and a pavilion with restroom. Intergenerational tournaments in tennis whites are a special favorite to recreate the atmosphere of 1930's pastimes.

The Airplane Hangar

A special feature of the Eagle Nest Preserve, this airplane hangar is found a mile down a private road through the woods. All members of the Eagle Nest Preserve have access to the hangar for parties and gatherings. Built in an era where family and friends regularly arrived via seaplane, this functioning airplane hangar is also used to store float planes and boats in winter for Eagle Nest property owners.

The wide cement landing and gently sloping sandy beach are a great site for a picnic and playtime with children or an evening Hoe-down celebration and bonfire.

Activities

Eagle Nest is ideal for exploring nature in all seasons. There is an abundance of summer fun with something for everyone. Hiking, biking (mountain biking and on-road), swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, tennis, fishing, water skiing, sailing, paddle-boarding, yoga on the covered porch, and wildlife viewing excursions on the lakes.

In the winter, unlimited access to cross country skiing and snowshoeing on the trails and frozen lakes is otherworldly, and ice-fishing can be most rewarding!

Blue Mountain Lake NY

Located in the heart of the Adirondack Park and easily accessible from Saranac, Albany, and Montreal airports, the property borders three pristine spring-fed lakes of the Eckford chain: Blue Mountain Lake, Eagle Lake, and Utowana. Neighboring villages of Indian Lake, Long Lake, and Inlet offer a host of local merchants, farmers' markets and services within a 10 mile radius.
