In the late 19th century, Lake Clear thrived as a hub of tourism, with nearby attractions such as the renowned Adirondack Great Camps and Paul Smith’s Hotel. Accessible via the Mohawk and Malone Railway in 1892 and later by the Adirondack Division of the New York Central Railroad, Lake Clear was a pivotal stop for travelers. However, post-World War II, its significance waned, leading to the removal of railway tracks in 2021 for the development of a new rail-trail connecting Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.

Today, Lake Clear remains a tranquil tourist destination, offering a retreat for visitors amidst its picturesque landscapes and recreational opportunities, including paddling in the nearby Saint Regis Canoe Area. With state-owned land encompassing much of its shoreline and attractions like the Adirondack Airport nearby, Lake Clear continues to enchant visitors seeking solace in its natural splendor.
